1 in 10 Americans has diabetes now, and the study revealed the number could increase to one in five or one in three by 2050 if the trend continues.
According to a study the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published Friday in the online journal Population Health Metrics, the number of Americans diagnosed with diabetes is rising and as many as one in three adults could have the disease by 2050.
In New Jersey, 4 percent of the population had diabetes in 2000, and the number rose to 9 percent in 2009, according to the state Department of Health and Senior Services. In that same year, 12% of adult black non-Hispanics in the state were diagnosed with diabetes, 6.2% of non-Hispanics, 8 percent of non-Hispanic Asians and 11.6% of Hispanics.
